An Art Retreat
In the South of France
“Painting Abstract Landscapes: Interpreting the Scene”
June 2nd - 9th 2023: SOLD OUT
Join me at the luxurious Château Thuriès in the Languedoc region of France for this Abstract Landscape painting workshop where we’ll explore the region and will learn how to interpret and paint the landscape
Welcome to this art retreat in the South of France. I’m so excited to be able to offer this fabulous opportunity! Please join me in the Southwest of France - an area famed by artists for it’s special light for hundreds of years. We’ll explore the local region, paint the glorious landscapes, enjoy studio art classes, visit the local market in Revel, visit the historical village of Carcassonne and eat sumptuous French cuisine and sample their wines. What is there not to love!
There are 4 king-size rooms available for this retreat (one can also be a twin). Partners are welcome too

The Art Workshop: What you will learn:
We’ll take a look at different styles of abstract landscape painting including impressionistic and expressive
You’ll enjoy 3 mornings of art tutoring in the studio at the chateau
You’ll be guided on how to paint landscapes on paper completely intuitively
We’ll take a look at mark-making techniques and tools
We’ll learn how to be inspired by photographs and will reduce scenes into shapes and tones
We’ll create landscapes with varying degrees of abstractness
We’ll paint outside on location and will take inspiration from our beautiful surroundings
The Accommodation:
We’ll stay at the stunning Château de Thuriès in the Languedoc region of Southwest France. The beautiful interiors have been designed with creativity and care by Jayne, as featured on Channel 4’s “Escape to the Chateau DIY”. Jayne is a creative herself, having hand-painted the beautiful murals and motifs which you’ll find in the rooms throughout the château. It’s no surprise that Jayne’s daughter is also an artist.
The Rooms
Rooms will be allocated on a first to book, first choice basis. Each of the 4 rooms feature a private bathroom and king size beds. The renaissance room can also be used with two twin beds, suitable for two friends sharing. It’s also possible for you to bring partners along who do not wish to join in the painting but will enjoy the holiday anyway (for a reduced price - see below).
What to Bring?
Please bring your own paints, brushes, mediums, sketch books, paper (and small canvasses or boards if you can). Chairs and easels will be provided. It doesn’t matter what your preferred media is, but I would recommend bringing acrylics and inks or oil paints, or all three!
Please bring an apron or suitable clothing for painting
Please bring a rucksack or something for carrying sketchbooks and paints to locations
I would suggest bringing a sun hat for shade while painting, sun glasses, a water bottle and all usual holiday items.
There is a small dip pool for bathing if the weather permits.
Feel free to email me with any questions about what to bring.
